How to Teach Luring
A Simple Step-by-Step Guide
What is Luring?
Luring means using a treat in your hand to guide your dog into a position, like sitting or lying down.
Steps to Teach Luring:
Step 1: Get a Tasty Treat
- Use a small, yummy treat your dog loves.
- Hold it between your fingers so your dog can smell it.
Step 2: Let Your Dog Follow the Treat
- Move the treat slowly in the direction you want your dog to go.
- Example: Move the treat up for a sit or down for a lie down.
Step 3: Reward When They Follow
- The moment your dog follows the treat into the right position, say “Yes!” and give them the treat.
Step 4: Repeat 5-10 Times
- Practice a few times so your dog understands.
- Make sure they follow the treat smoothly.
Step 5: Remove the Treat, Keep the Hand Motion
- After a few tries, use an empty hand to guide them, then reward.
- This helps your dog learn hand signals instead of always following food.
